urutaus

Urutaus are nocturnal birds restricted to the warmer regions of the New World, which belong to the genus Nyctibius and to the Nyctibiidae family. It is also called mother-of-the-moon and seventh-stump. It is known a fossil of Nyctibius griseus from the Pleistocene of Lapa da Escritura, Lagoa Santa, Minas Gerais.

Urutau is a nocturnal bird. Its food consists basically of insects that catch in flight, especially large ones, but can eat other small animals, such as bats, lizards and small birds.

It is a bird that uses its plumage very well to camouflage itself. Usually it passes through a piece of wood, a tree branch or even split or standing trunks. Usually stay static, do not be scaring easily. Reaches up to 37 cm off the tail. It is not a species accustomed to urban conviviality.
