Shetland pony
The Shetland pony is a pony breed from the Shetland Islands. Shetlands range in size from a minimum height of approximately 7 spans to an official maximum height of 11 spans (44 inches, 112 cm) at the withers (11.2 sts, 46 inches, 117 cm) for American Shetlands). Shetland ponies have dense fur, short legs and are considered very intelligent. It is a strong pony race, being used for riding, loading and traction.use
Nowadays, shetlands are assembled by children and exhibited for both children and adults, riding lessons and carriage driving, or as attractions for rural fairs and amusement parks. They are also seen in mini zoos and sometimes used in equine therapy. In the UK, Shetlands also compete in the Shetland Pony Grand National race, galloping on a racetrack with young jockeys.Miniature Shetlands have been trained as guide horses by playing the same role as guide dogs. This task is also performed by other miniature horse breeds.
