squirrel-of-Mongolian or gerbil

squirrel-of-Mongolian or gerbil

The gerbil or squirrel-of-Mongolian (Meriones unguiculatus) is one of the rodents that entered the world of pets. Apparently this animal is physically similar to the tiny hamster, who keeps a great relationship, requiring however some very different care of his fellow men. It is a rodent with a lot of character that when you feel pampered and loved behaves amiably, and relates well with its owner.

In the beginning it was used as a guinea pig, but because of its amazing qualities, eventually becoming one of the most popular pet rodents in North America.

Its origin is from Mongolia, place dry climate and desert landscapes. These antecedents mark their needs and customs very different from the rest of your order. A classic example is your ideal place to live, as the cages are not recommended as accommodation for this little fellow, due to the fact hurt your nose with the bars and play all fodder out by his tendency to dig. The recommended would be something like a glass terrarium or plastic with some fodder that he can dig.

Although many "pet shops" selling seed mix as a power base for these animals, this practice is not correct. Squirrels-of-Mongolian require specific feed for hamsters and gerbils, as well as seeds, fresh fruits (sour fruit should not be consumed) and animal protein (mealworms, beetles and other peanuts).

In the 1930s, dozens of gerbils Mongolia and Manchuria were captured and taken to the United States and Japan. Americans gerbils were sold to England and both countries exported the young to various regions.
