The term shrimp (the cammārus Latin, sea crab, shrimp, derived from the Greek kámmaros or kámmoros) is the common name to various crustaceans from the order of decapod and may be marine or freshwater. These crustaceans have the abdomen long, laterally compressed body, the first three pairs of legs and chelae rostrum usually developed.Fisheries and aquaculture shrimp is one of the most important economic activities due to the high commercial value. According to the information "FISHSTAT Plus" FAO, in 2002, the world catch of marine shrimp was 2,843,020 tons, while world production by aquaculture was 1,292,476 tons. Recently, several species of coral prawns have been marketed by aquarist industry.
There are several other species of aquatic crustaceans that have in its name the word shrimp, but belong to different groups, such as the shrimp-of-shell (Conchostraca order) and the shrimp-tadpoles (Notostraca order).
Commercial shrimp are also known by other names, such as prawns or lobster (the large, such as "tiger prawns Giant", Penaeus monodon, which can reach about 35 cm in length and a weight of about 500 g - which are the average dimensions of the true crayfish).
Shrimp farming, is as it is called the creation of the shrimp aquaculture systems.
